Thirty or so tedious minutes on the “hamster wheel” is something people tend to imagine when the word “cardio” comes up. This type of cardio is known as “steady-state”, and from the word itself, consists of doing exercises maintained at a consistent pace and intensity for longer durations. In short, the longer you run, the more calories you will burn. Although tried and tested over decades, steady-state cardio tends to be boring, and this makes working out seem like a chore for those who don’t enjoy running or doing the same thing for too long.
In contrast, the concept behind interval training is to keep you on your toes and your heart rate pumping at its peak. Relatively shorter bursts of physical activity at higher intensities pushes your body to its limits but allows you to take minimal breaks to catch your breath and recover before moving onto the next exercise. Fifteen minutes of HIIT can have the same calorie-burning potential as thirty minutes of steady-state cardio at low speed, but with added benefits of activating different muscles throughout your body and producing an afterburn effect both of which are perfect for quickly achieving your body goals.
But is HIIT right for everyone? The answer is yes and no. HIIT is not ideal for someone who has never exercised in their life, is highly sedentary, and/or has any heart condition that may be triggered or exacerbated by intense exercise. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t try HIIT. After getting used to more traditional forms of cardio and becoming familiar with various exercises, you can try incorporating HIIT into your weekly routine to take your fitness journey to the next level. It is best to consult with your doctor along with a professional trainer to assess your current fitness level and plan out your ideal HIIT routine.
